"One of the World's Best Children's Magicians"
|
Doug Scheer is a magician's magician. He's not only one of the busiest children's performers in the Midwest, but he's also regularly called upon to lecture to his peers across the country at conventions from Las Vegas to Orlando. His topic is "Using Special Needs Volunteers on Stage." And Doug has a lot of experience interacting with special needs kids since his son was diagnosed with mild autism in 2004. "When your child receives that diagnosis you feel helpless because doctors tell you there is not much you can do, but we've done a lot," says Doug. "I channeled my frustration and shock over his new 'label' by getting to work writing and producing this show to teach kids that it's okay to be different." Doug has also received international exposure with magazine articles he's written on working with special needs kids and created Diversity Circus as an artistic response to his son's diagnosis. Doug's wife, Heidi, plays Smudgy The Clown in Diversity Circus, but also travels internationally speaking on bio-medical treatments for autism and presents her film "Gannon's Story" to inspire other families who've received the same diagnosis. But Diversity Circus is just one of the shows Doug offers elementary schools. His company Scheer Genius Productions currently features 12 different shows in its online catalog.
